Recent Rains
Well the Bureau of Meteorology
predicted heavy rains and for once they were right (sorry
Brian- I just couldnt resist!). We got bucket loads
of the wet stuff over the past 48 hours and the local
rivers were showing the effects with the Rubi and Acheron
well out of its banks and many roads inaccessible.
The Rubicon was higher
than we have seen it for several years and actually
broke through at Tumbling Waters which is something
we do not see too often. The road between Thornton
and Tumbling Waters was cut off for a period and many
other roads in the district were also closed for a period
on Wednesday.
As you can see from the
photos there was a lot of water in the immediate vicinity
of town. Photo 1 shows thge very last house in Thornton
on the road to Alexandra and the entire area between
town and the river is inundated. Click on the image
for a larger more detailed pic.
Photo 2 shows the road
just of town that leads to the Rubicon and is affectionately
known to those that fish it as 'the tennis court road'.
There is one low swail on this road and those that know
it
will be able to imagine how much water is running through
it in the photo. Impassable unless you have a hovercraft.
Photos 3 & 4 are of
the main road out front of the 'tennis court' house
about 800 metres out of Thornton towards Alexandra.
This gully was a large flowing river and where it backed
up was a huge lake. Amazing to see.
The last photo is of the
picnic area at Tumbling Waters as the water receded.
It was still a raging torrent at 1pm Wednesday and when
David pulled up there about two hours before me on his
way
to Melbourne and found two inexperienced kayakers about
to gear up and tackle it having never seen the river
before. Madmen!
Its great to see some typical
spring rains again with plenty more to come between
now and mid-November. The lake will really benefit from
downpours such as this and its great to see the ground
wet and plenty of runoff occurring. Lets just hope the
rivers clear just a little for the weekend. Even for
just a little dry fly fishing on Opening Weekend. Maybe
Sunday night!!

** Bonus pic of the shallow
depression running out by the 'tennis court' house.
