MAFRI Projects - Goulburn River Trout Research
The Goulburn River downstream
of Eildon is part of a great system of trout fisheries
within the Goulburn Valley. Since the introduction of
trout fishing regulations, MAFRI has been studying the
trout fishery to learn about size and age composition
of the trout stocks in the river and the trout that
anglers are catching.
In 2001, two new Goulburn
River research projects will start.
The first will attempt
to estimate the size of the 'catchable' trout population
using a mark and recapture study. During regular winter
electro-fishing surveys, research staff have tagged
around 300 trout. Each of these were caught and then
released between Eildon and the Breakaway Bridge and
each fish now carries a plastic dart tag with a unique
ID number.
MAFRI will attempt to estimate
the size of the trout population by monitoring the proportion
of tagged fish caught by anglers and in MAFRI recapture
surveys. Anglers can assist by reporting all tagged
trout that they catch in this section of the Goulburn
River to MAFRI, Snobs Creek (ph: 03 5774 2208). Anglers
should record the tag number and the length of the fish
as well as the date and location of capture.
The second project revolving
around the Goulburn River will study the relationship
between the changing river height and the amount of
suitable habitat that is available for spawning and
juvenile rearing. This will help fishery managers understand
why some years are better than others for Goulburn trout
stocks and assist us to provide advice about appropriate
flow management.
In addition to these two
new projects, MAFRI has been working with the Goulburn
Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA) to design
and install improved in-stream trout habitat. This is
part of a much larger GBCMA project being funded by
the Recreational Fishing Licence which has improved
angler access to kilometres of riverbank by clearing
dense willow thickets, fencing out livestock and revegetating
riverbanks with native vegetation.
