INSECTS OF THE GOULBURN VALLEY
This section of the site
has always been here but I have not been able to maintain
it due to always being so busy here at the centre. As
a result the last thing that I wanted to do was burn
a lot of film, time and money trying to get things right
with a small chance of success. All that has now changed
thanks to the wonderful world of digital photography
and the instant results that go hand in hand with this
way of shooting.
So we hope that you enjoy
the following photos/info. As time goes on (read from
week to week) we will continually add more photos. I
have a couple of friends who are full time entomologists
who have offered to identify all mayflies but we may
not take them up on this at this point in time. As fly
fisherman we do not really need to know finite detail
on the insects displayed. What is important to us is
when do they hatch? what fly do we use for the various
stages? and what is the most vulnerable stage for each
insect?
While we may add some of
the specifics on species over time that will certainly
not be the focus of this part of the site. We will however
bring you an overload of anecdotal evidence collected
over many decades of fishing and many hours each week
guiding to help make you more aware of your local fishery
and also to help you to understand the rhythms of the
season and ultimately to help you all catch more fish.
One last point is that
while we are out there every day we cannot collect everything
and even when we get a shot we can often improve on
it at a later date. See the March Brown page for an
example of this. So if you are out and witness a good
hatch or fall and can catch a couple of sample without
damaging them then please bring them into the centre
for us to photograph. I am going to credit everyone
who brings in a bug on the honor board with details
of which photos they helped to acquire.
So that's it for now. You
can get to this page at any time from the link on the
left in Orange. A little symbol will appear saying 'new'
on the Local Insects tab whenever we update this part
of the site. Enjoy.
Cheers
