Specimen jars showcase all the insects trout eat!

Entomology Sessions

Here is a topic that bewilders many budding fly fishers and even some of us old timers! Entomology can be as simple or as detailed as the individual desires. Luckily fish don't understand Latin and you don't have to either. Being able to identify the main insect types and select an appropriate fly pattern is critical if you are to have success and this is where we can help with one of our entomology sessions.

Conducted in our shop and on local rivers the sessions usually run anywhere from one to three hours and give all participants a thorough understanding of the insect types as well as handy notes to take away with them. Starting in the shop we go over the 'Life Cycle' boards and view real samples of the insects. These are in the form of 'specimen jar' collections as well as live examples. After the shop session we go out to our lakes and do some sampling to capture and identify the insect types found in stillwaters. Then it is off to a local stream to do the same out in the wild.
Learn to tell a mayfly from a caddis and choose the correct fly pattern

This is the best way to learn about the insects trout eat. We currently do sessions for Mornington Peninsula, Southern and Yarra Valley Fly Fishers as well as a host of Corporations and Private Groups. Entomology sessions for individuals can also be arranged for any day of the year.
