| Fishing Report Tuesday 12th November Weather Pattern: A cold front over western Victoria will extend across the remainder of the State during this evening and overnight. Another cold front will cross Tasmania on Thursday. A high pressure system will then move south of Victoria during Friday and over the Tasman Sea on Saturday.
This report is late and will be kept short and sweet. We have again been very busy and have been getting plenty of fish, but not just the small rainbow variety. Hatches have continued to be good with mayfly duns and spinners around most evenings as well as caddis, midges and termites on the muggy nights. The fish have been rising to the feast on offer. Polaroiding has seen the downfall of the better fish with about 25 x 2lb plus browns caught and released since Friday. That is about as good as any of us can ever remember. While we have an advantage in that we fish the goulburn everyday and know the exact location of many fish, we have to say it has been superb. the best fish was over 3lb and the smallest we have caught using sight fishing methods was around 1.5lb. Very good fishing and set to continue. The nymphing down between Gilmores and Breakaway Bridge has continued to be excellent. Most people are getting their bag x 2 with plenty getting 20 + fish. Fishing across and down with two beadheads has been especially productive while upstream with an indicator nymph has also been good. The better rainbows have been around the 12" mark. Not big but a lot of fun. Evenings have seen everything happening. Duns on cooler nights, spinners and caddis on the others. The termites were out in numbers on Friday and Saturday nights and also tonight. These little critters have been appearing in their thousands and their presence is obvious. Looking out our windows over the lakes, when every fish is rising at once, you can safely predict that the termites are out. Other than that the other creeks are slow. The Rubi is getting better with a few caught there in the past couple of days and also some great fish in the Acheron. Most people returning from up in the hills bring a frown into the shop with them as cold water temps and high flows make things difficult. The Swampy is fishing well by all accounts and we are up there for two weeks come this Sunday. Also Cane Day is this Saturday and we expect quite a few to turn out this year. If you enjoy fishing and ogling with cane rods, please join us this Saturday for a fun day of fishing and camaraderie. Now for the rest of the report. Friday night we literally ran out of the shop to hit the river just before dark. A response to the huge termite hatch. Those in the shop were 'ushered out' with a handful of termite patterns. we did not do too well, having to walk a kilometre down from Gilmore's to avoid others and then having a cool wind come up and turn it off. Dave got a couple and Antony hooked one. Rob and Michael did not get a bump. Next morning saw the raft out for a 6am start and it was worth it. By 7am we had two fish around the 1.75-2lb mark in the boat. The river was dead flat, the air temps were quite warm and we had midge and caddis coming off. Oh and there was plenty of rising fish. Between then and 1pm Rob and Antony hooked a a dozen or so fish, all of which were 2lb or better. The best was a smidgeon under 3lb. The fish were all found in edgewaters/backwaters and steadily rising. All took a dry fly and we await the photos from Rob as soon as he gets his two rolls of film developed. Rob usually fishes the Flaming Gorge on the Green River and it was comparable to days he has back at home. Only it was all polaroiding. That afternoon David was out doing some streamside guiding with Andrew who landed his first fish on the fly. Other reports were all of plenty of fish on the nymph although there were plenty of people fishing below Gilmores as word has well and truly got out about the rainbows. One report received via email today is from Peter who says.... Antony; Sunday I cannot recall what happened. As the guys are not around I cannot comment about it too much other than to say that the fishing continued with fine weather and plenty of fish on nymphs. Yesterday David had a half day float with Sid and Mark. Both were very experienced fly fishers and had a ball. They had a very similar day to Rob and Antony had on Saturday. They caught four fish between them on dries. All bar one were polaroided. The smallest were two 'pound' fish, one 2lb and one solid 3lb'er. They had a few chances that did not come off but were pleased catching their biggest Goulburn River fish they had ever caught. Meanwhile Geoff and Ossie fished the rise behind our place for a very slow result. Two fish splashed and that was it. Antony and Matt went to Gilmores and got 14 rainbows all around 12" long in their 35 minutes on the water just prior to dark. Today was hot and then humid. Geoff and Steve drifted for great results. Steve owns the Tackle Shop in Apollo Bay and visits us on his annual trip to the north east. He is in Corryong right now. They got 7 fish to the net and dropped three more, also missing a few. All were sighted and fished to with a dry. Most were around the 2lb mark with one going close to 2.75lb. There were rising fish from the word go. Tonight Antony and Ossie got blown off the water while out on an evening drift. There were plenty of fish rising until the wind came up and some spots of rain fell. They rowed hard to make the take out point by dark with no fish rising. As soon as they reached the car the wind stopped, it got sticky again and the fish began to rise. Just typical. Tomorrow morning we have half day drifts starting @ 1pm and 6am. I am taking Michael @ 6am so this will wrap up this report. More details on Friday or Saturday depending on how busy we are. The Rubicon Has started to fish better with guided streamcraft sessions producing fish. geoff and Ossie did the best with a 1.5lb brown on the hopper. It is still a couple of weeks away but we are enjoying some reasonable fishing now. The Pondage Please phone Ivor @ Eildon Bait and Tackle for the latest on what's happening. 5774 2348 or go to: Eildon Bait and Tackle Reports Our Lakes Fish rising late in the day when it is humid to termites. Great hatch fishing with dozens of trout rising all over the lake. Wrap Up! Overall good fishing in the Goulburn. The hatches are good, there are plenty of small rainbows for those who want to catch fish all day, there is polaroiding for the experienced backwater angler and the evenings can be spectacular. Take advantage of it while it lasts as you will not see the Goulburn this good for a long time. We are certainly enjoying the current conditions. Prediction: more of the same.
